America's largest chain of puppy-selling pet stores, Petland Inc., is also the nation's largest retail supporter of puppy mills. There are more than 200 Petland stores worldwide, with about 140 in the U.S. These stores sell tens of thousands of puppies each year.
The HSUS's eight-month investigation revealed that many Petland stores across the country are marketing puppy mill puppies to unsuspecting consumers.
Tell Petland's corporate headquarters to stop selling puppies. Then contact a Petland near you and tell them that you are concerned about puppy mills.
Please call, visit, or write a letter to your local Petland store. Phone numbers and mailing addresses are also listed below.
If a Petland store claims they deal with "reputable" breeders, remember that similar claims were made at every Petland store HSUS visited.
Ask to see records documenting where the puppies came from and write the information down. If the store has nothing to hide, they should be willing to share this information. If the store does show you the records, look for dealers like Hunte and Lambriar, which indicate that the store is not buying directly from the breeder, or for entities like Kathy Bauck/Pick of the Litter, MAM Kennel, and Clearwater Kennel, who were mentioned in our report. Also note whether the puppies have been shipped from distant states.
